Prepaid Calling Cards

my sister in law gave birth recently. they are based in dubai so when my brother phoned us that they're on their way to the hospital (she gave birth 2 weeks early - to their first child!), we were worried and anxious and excited all at the same time. the talk was short, just informing us of what's happening. my mom wanted to phone back but phoning directly using our landline would be very expensive.

we searched online and found that therich.com compare prices of different prepaid calling cards which make choosing the best deal easy. it's like choosing black or white, all straightforward. you get all the cards in one page, along with the price and the number of minutes available.

mom was able to phone back and found out that the little tyke is 8lbs heavy! my sister in law's lucky. she did not have a hard time giving birth!

Digital Frames

what's it like to have a harry potter type of photos? the moving type? i might know in the next few years as technology is rapidly improving. anyways, i found something close to it. the next in-thing are digital frames. my mom said my sister has a digital picture frame, which her friends gave her as a wedding gift. she said the pictures are saved on the memory card and you can have a slide show of sort so the photos changes every few minutes. that's cool! unfortunately for her friends, it was still expensive when they bought it. but now, there are cheaper ones, but of same quality, out in the market. see, we can have a little 'magic' in our own homes =).

went to see the fraudster's site and i was happy to know that she has erased all her copied posts. the nerve talaga! nothing really important, i shouldn't have dome it as her ranking might go up some more *lol*.

anyways, i just want to let you all know that i visit your blogs every chance i have. im just swamped with work that i don't have time to leave a message in your blogs. but i do visit and update myself on what's going on in the world wide web.

hope i could post some time-worthy entries in the next few days. take care!

Save Buckets

our youngest brother has been wooing the 'elders' to buy him a laptop. they all say he doesn't need it since they (at my parent's house) have a desktop that only him uses (apart from my mom who just checks her email every other day). my brother has been bugging him to support him in his plea. im sure he'll do everything i say once i back him up especially with the special offer i saw from savebuckets.co.uk. imagine laptops as low as 218£! there are loads of other offers on site. i might end up buying one for myself!

Artistic

i noticed that my son is showing a lot of interest and talent in drawing. at the age of three he can already draw very detailed images. he likes to draw different characters and caricatures of his family. I'm so proud and happy to say that he got his talent from his parents. just for the record, both of us, me and my husband were fine arts grads, gifted with artistic skills..hehehe. anyways, this weekend we plan to go to the mall to buy some coloring stuff for him, I'm sure he'll love it. i hope i remember to post some of his artwork in my next posts.

Break

my mom and i are planning to go to hongkong sometime in december. we're not going there for leisure but im asking her to accompany me as i want to buy some materials i would need for my project. anyways, im on a tight budget. i know my mom's willing to pay for the trip but it's me who asked, so i want to should the expenses.

i need to find the cheapest package there is for both of us - flights and accomodations included. we'll be away for only 3 days and we're not actually looking for plush hotels and expensive apartments. fortunately, with Hotel Reservations, they provide information on everything - cheap flights, accomodations from budget to expensive ones. there's A LOT to choose from. if only i drive, i'll rent a car from them as well.

it's hong kong this time, next time, the rest of the world! well, i guess i need to file that annual leave, otherwise, all this planning will be worthless.

my sister discovered this fraudster who's been nicking other people's entries and creative works. how pathetic! lots of people have reacted already. i don't care if you steal my posts but one thing i can't take. WE'RE IN NO WAY RELATED!! don't you dare claim my son as your nephew. we were brought up well, with good values. you, however, were not. so please, mahiya ka naman sa sarili mo! we don't look like you. ala sa lahi namin ang pangit!

Pop Up No More

i usually blog in a cafe as i don't have the time when i get home. it's just annoying having all these pop ups appearing on my screen, wasting my time as i need to close them up before i could proceed with my blogging. i wish this particular cafe in festival mall will purchase a popup blocker. he should protect his network here as i know some pop-ups have viruses in them. well, why do i care about this crap. i'll just find another cafe with a more decent system.

NCAA

hubby is into basketball, among other sports. he said if ever he goes to the US, he'd like to watch an NCAA Tournament. it's not as sensationalized as the nba and he said the brilliant players from nba all came from ncaa. fine, whatever! i teased him, why not just watch the local ncaa. good players are drafted on to the pba. *lol*

Labels:

hubby's cousin is getting married. im the one tasked to organize her bridal shower. i have lots of ideas and hopefully, we'll be able to pull it through. she's got this really sensitive radar that she almost always knows that something fishy is going on. we plan on wearing sexy corsets and we'll be buying playful giveaways for her guests. not only will she remember this for the rest of her life but this will be the best shower she'll ever have, unless it's with her hubby *wink*

Mina

Thursday, 22 November 2007

tropical storm, mina, has now turned into a typhoon. it's heading for bicol but it may change direction and hit central or northern luzon instead. i just hope it won't take any lives. last typhoon we had, lando, 10 died and 6 missing. and just remember what happened to bangladesh when a cyclone hit them. scary! mother nature is getting back at us! so folks, don't forget your umbrellas and raincoats and wellies. brace yourself for some flooding. take care!

Labels:

Health and Safety

most times, i wish our family's based abroad. everytime i hear my sister's stories about the benefits they have there, i get envious. we'll never have them here! imagine having a 1 year maternity leave! not just that, they have stricter rules in terms of health and safety. help is readily available in case of accidents. they even have Raleigh personal injury attorneys that will help them process claims. here, it will take you years and most times, you won't be able to claim anything. not to mention legal fees are very very expensive. low income means no one will be able to afford the fees of lawyers. who will help them? they just give up and don't bother in the end.

Richer or Poorer?

you'd think that life is hard in the philippines, think again. you can find lots of people in malls, shopping (or is it just the christmas fever?). lots of people are having their homes build. my dad is very busy these days. just early today, he has been on the phone ordering plumbing fixtures for one of the ensuite in one of the houses he's doing. the owners have such expensive taste, if i may say. these are some of the things that will confuse you on the philippines' true economic status. but as they say, the rich is getting richer but the poor, poorer. *sigh*

Labels:

Coolers

my hubby bought several wine coolers to give away to family and friends. he thinks since christmas is fast approaching, they would be really handy. he said it's the festive season, there'll be lots of drinking, merry-making. i think that's the best idea he had come up with so far. last year, he thought of giving away comic books! i mean, yeah, for kids and probably his age group. but for the oldies? unless they collect, of course.

last christmas, my mom gave me and my sister matching pearl necklace. it came in a set with earrings and bracelet and ring. my mom has her own and thought it would look nice if we're all wearing similar accessories. we all wore it on my sister's wedding. some said pearl should not be worn during a wedding. but we don't really believe in them. to each his own.

only a little over a month before christmas and im happy to announce that i am already done with my christmas shopping. all christmas stockings are filled. no more cramming this time. it's always better to start early, beat the rush and at the same time, get good value for money. prices usually soar higher nearer christmas because of those late shoppers doing last minute cramming. now i can just relax and watch other people scampering about =)

Gold

my mom's friend is into selling jewelries. from bracelets, necklaces, rings or even simple gold chains. she usually asks her relatves in dubai to buy it for her and they ship it to the philippines. she does it like that because it's cheaper there. and sometimes, they're on buy1 take 1 promo. not only does she saves money, but she gets to keep the other one for herself!

when my husband was still single, he used to drive a racer type car. but he had to give it up because we needed a bigger family car. at first he was so sad that he had to give it up. his family told him he did not have to sell it but he can't use it if he's driving us as it's too cramped. anyway, i think he only likes it because he has personalized it and spent lots of times tinkering with it. even his car spoiler was specially made.

he had to sell the car in the end as he said it will just be wasted if it won't be used much. it's better that other people will enjoy its power while it lasts.

3. i look mataray, but im not. that is, kung feel kita *lol*

4. im not brand conscious. kahit i look kikay, i still go for comfort AND price.

i told her to just book a holiday for a few days, there are lots of sun holidays i see advertised in the net. im sure she'll find one that will suit their budget (brother-in-law's a bit tight *lol*). being in europe is an advantage. they are surrounded by all these wonderful countries waiting to be discovered. if i were them, i'll be out every other week!

Good Riddance

do you remember my story about a friend of mine who's having second thoughts on whether to push thru with her wedding or not. well, she finally made a decision, a very easy decision.
on the day of the prenup (where they went to tagaytay for the pictorial), she got hold of her boyfriend's cellphone, she doesn't usually do it, but that day, she accidentally opened the sent items and to her surprise, there was a message from her boyfriend to a girl named MIA, and the message went like "hi, it's already dark, you take care on your way home, it's raining, i miss you and i love you". so it turned out that the guy is having an affair with another girl. and my friend (actually me as well) couldn't believe that he can do such a thing. all along we thought he's Mr. Nice Guy, perfect and everybody likes him. but we were wrong. i even thought that my friend will be the one to do that, because she enjoys flirting with other guys. good thing was, she's now able to cancel the wedding without the guilt. the road ends for the runaway bride. well, at least, this one has.

our room is a mess. this weekend, IF i have the energy, i will try to organize our stuff and tidy up around. our stereo cabinet is full of crap, empty cd cases, disks not in their proper cases, missing cds which i need to trace. my son's toys are all over the place as well. i have to teach my boys to put their things in their proper places. well, they do, sometimes. or the maid does it. but it's really difficult to be the only girl in the house. am i wishing for a baby girl? nah. i'll just clean up! =)

last sunday, together with my mom, we went around the metro looking for this chair that my mother in law wants for her lounge. she asked me to do it for her since she knows that i've got good taste =). so we visited all the furniture stores that we could think of. unfortunately, i did not find anything that would suit the theme of her house which, at the moment, is moroccan. fortunately for my mom, though, she found this lamp that looked really chic and contemporary.

at least our effort was worth it.

there's still a lot i need to learn if i want to have my own business. but im learning everyday.

im getting really excited. i can feel christmas already. we'll be decorating the tree soon and it's really a big event at home. imagine decorating a 20ft tree! but i love it, my son enjoys doing it.

yes, the tree is 20ft tall. that means, lots of gifts to put under the tree. i've done most of my shopping already for my family but i need to buy some more for my godkids, hubby's godkids, cousins, friends and neighbours. i don't mind as i can get coupon codes from couponchief.com. smart shopping, hey?

anyways, i haven't bought anything for myself yet. never forget to buy yourselves pressies! you deserve it after the hard work you've done for the whole year. im planning to buy a new travel bag using
ebags coupons. and for hubby, i plan to give him a new digital camera using dell coupons. imagine, he failed to take photos of our son trick or treating! now, i would need to ask neighbors if they were able to take a snap of my son.

this is hassle-free shopping, everyone! thank god for the internet!

New Offer

last Friday, I've received a letter from Newtrends International (distributor of many designers' eye wear like Gucci, Michael Kors and Versace, etc here in the Philippines). it's an invitation to fill up a post in their company. actually about a year ago, i applied to be a visual merchandiser in the same company, got hired but in the end, i turned down the offer because i didn't like their schedule. pay was really good, though. now they have an opening again but for the position of a creative supervisor and senior graphic artist. im so flattered because, imagine, they are considering me as a creative head. wow! but I'm having second thoughts because it's a risk, it's something new and im not good with changes. i feel that i need this change of environment but at the same time im scared i may not live up to their expectations. Haaay! think Cheryl, think.

Life Insurance

my sister has been rattling on about the importance of having insurance - for the car, the house, life insurance. she used to be a skeptic, like i am now. earning money is so hard here in the philippines that the extra cash i have, i would rather spend on my son's extra curricular activites. but my sister pointed out that that's precisely the point. money is hard to come by so we must make sure we protect ourselves and we have to think of our son's future. we don't know what will happen to us, what with all the chaos that's happening here, we'll never know. im not a convert yet but we're looking for affordable life insurance. she still has a valid point!

Mortgage Nightmare

Wednesday, 14 November 2007

many people want to have their own house. but many can't really afford it. especially here in the philippines when everything's expensive and yet the salary is barely enough to cover everyday expenses. inspite of this, people, specially those with families, strive hard to have their own homes. they apply for home loans and hoping that the interest rates won't fluctuate much to keep up with the payments. unfortunately, the market has been cruel. interest rates are soaring high. people can't keep up with their monthly payments that some of them are resorting to loans just to pay for their mortgages. though it's a quick solution, in the long run, that's additional debt. i know a copule of people who have lost their homes because they couldn't pay anymore. i just wish the economy will pick up, we'll get decent salaries so we can enjoy the fruits of our labor.

North Face

when my mom and sister went to the us, they have bought me and hubby a North Face jacket each. i haven't seen them yet as i haven't gone to my parent's house yet but my younger brother is asking me if he can have hubby's jacket instead! he'll gladly swap it with another one my mom bought for him. i don't think so, bro. that only means that the jackets look fancy and cool.

Business Appraisal

our company should be appraised in terms of their business performance management. the company is doing good, mind you, in terms of profit and net shares. but the way they handle their staff, their lack of support, is very disapproving. without us, there won't be any company at all. we are overworked and underpaid. i know most employees are suffering the same predicament but at least, it would be easier if we feel appreciated. they should change some of their policies and open lines of communication better. i have learned a lot from them. but if they won't improve, i might accept another job offer. real soon.

Vegas

i haven't been to the US but am hoping to go there next year, if time permits. i would like to go to new york because it's the fashion district but hubby would want to go to las vegas and california for i-don't-want-to-know reasons *lol*. im guessing girls and gambling? nah. he's got some relatives there who would want us to come over. who knows, if we find good value Las Vegas Real Estate, we might end up staying there for good. im just tired of the pollution, politics, killings in the philippines. not good for my kid.

Mom's Home

Monday, 12 November 2007

my mom arrived last sunday night. her plane touched down at around 11pm. they were able to get home at 1am the next day! i haven't seen her yet as i've got work and adam goes to school. i'll drop by one of these days to welcome her back (and get our loot *lol*), hoping that i'll be in one of the malls near our parent's house. if not, we'll go there saturday pa. i talked to her on the phone though and she's got lots of stories during her uk, us and dubai trip. sosyal! she said she missed us but she can't wait to leave again! aba aba aba!

Marrying Young

my parents have always told us to finish our studies, have goals in life and work hard to reach our goals. unfortunately, there was a time in life when i was sidetracked. i got pregnant even before finishing my degree. i married young. but nevertheless, i finished my studies, had my baby and can consider myself as one of the Women men adore.

i am not advocating getting pregnant and marrying young. but these things happen, most often than not, they're not actually planned. but it's how we pick up the pieces, how we correct our mistakes, how we get our lives back on track. my goals are still the same, be successful and be the best in my field. the only difference is, i now have a husband and a son that serve as my inspiration. what ever i do, it's not just for me, but for them as well.

Almost Perfect

adam had his exams a week late. he was allowed by his school to defer his exams until after the holidays. we went to palawan at that time tapos todos los santos. anyways, my smarty pants got perfect scores in all but one subject, science. my gulay, tama bang ang tanong different parts of the plants. he only got 96 on that subject. d ba grade 1 pa un tinuturo? not at 3 years old! but nevertheless, im so so proud of him! he's actually claiming his power ranger toy that we promised if he does well in school. and he did. kaya i better him his toy or he might think we're not taking him seriously. galing for a 3 year old d b? Air Cool

our company transport gave out on us last saturday. we were doing our usual rounds of malls when our van overheated. imagine being stuck in traffic, causing more traffic! it was hot and the aircon wasn't working. even the car fan did not work! it took us 3 hours before another van rescued us. it was a blessing in disguise though. they were really waiting for this van to 'die away'. now that it has, we'll have a new one. yey!

Rehab

lots of celebrities now are undergoing drug rehabilitation. is it the new fad? they're supposed to be role models to their fans! but as it is, they are not setting good examples. there are now more and more people addicted to these drugs. ecstacy, heroin, cocaine. that's not the solution to the problem, people! you've got your families, friends. talk to them. well, unless they are addicts as well, what hope do you have. anyways, there are a lot of rehabs that can help you get over this madness. don't wait till it's too late.

Give Aways

when my sister got married, she had a hard time deciding what souvenir to give to her entourage. although she did not fuss much about it, she still had difficulty deciding which one she should give. her theme was zen and it was easy buying for her female entourage. it's the groomsmen gift she had problems with. i guess it's difficult to buy men gifts, in general. it seems like there's not much merchandise around for them, aside from the usual clothes, shoes, games. not much the usual accessories that women have loads of.

another idea for a good business!

being full time working parents, im a bit worried that we won't be able to really help our son with his school needs. we're still looking for a nanny who could help him study as well. his previous one is a college graduate so she was godsend. but she had to go home to attend to some urgent family affair.

fortunately, my son is smart and is excelling really well in school. he could study with very minimum guidance. but he's still little and their lessons are not that complicated yet. when school work gets complicated, that would be the problem. who would do his essay editing? who would proof read his assignments?

i know im making a big deal out of this when there's no need but really, i don't want my son to feel that he's being neglected. and i know that once he gets frustrated, he might just give up his studies and be the rebellious child that doesn't want to go to school anymore! that would be a nightmare i don't ever want to have.

Frustrating!

im having a hard time saving my posts with my host (calling ate!). 2 of my previous posts took ages to save, i don't know what's wrong. it's frustrating especially since im just trying to squeeze blogging in, renting a pc in a cafe (we haven't got an internet connection in the office, most probably it's blocked) and when i get home, i don't have time anymore. so pls. let this save and my paid posts... please!

Steel Toe

Monday, 5 November 2007

i have done my christmas shopping already. the only person left i haven't bought a gift yet for is my dad. he'd say he doesn't mind not getting any gifts but you can see that he's happy opening one for himself.

im thinking of giving him Steel Toe Boots. he's a contractor, an engineer, his work entails going to construction sites and overseeing the building works. it is a requirement to have heavy duty work boots, as health and safety precautions.

so now, i have to get his shoe size without giving away my gift idea. i don't know how to do it, without him suspecting. hopefully i'll be able to sneak out one of his shoes without him noticing.

that's all the gifts sorted!

Cooking Is Fun

seriously! remember the recipe i shared last time, the one i was so into when i was out of the country? i cooked it together with a Chicken Stir-Fry with Broccoli and Cashews. im not sure they really go well, but both my boys enjoyed the meal. adam even ate loads of broccoli. i thought he'd be freaked out with all the 'little trees' in his food, but wasn't. yup, that's how he described the broccoli, little trees.

anyways, here is the recipe for that chicken stir fry:

Makes 6 servings

Ingredients:

1/4 cup soy sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons sherry
3/4 teaspoons freshly grated ginger
1 1/2 pounds boneless chicken
1 pound broccoli, peel stems breast, cut in 1" pieces
7 tablespoons peanut oil, divided
1/2 cup sliced green onions
1 large clove garlic, crushed and finely chopped
1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped cashews

Preparation:

Mix soy sauce, sherry, ginger and chicken in a small bowl. Mix and let stand 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, cut florets off broccoli and reserve. Cut tough ends off stalks. Diagonally slice stalks into 1/4-inch thick slices.

Steam over boiling water 3 to 4 minutes, until crisp-tender. Drain, rinse under cold water. Dry.

Assemble all ingredients on a prep tray near the stove. Heat 4 tablespoons oil in a wok or large skillet. Add green onions, garlic and cashews; cook and stir 3 minutes. Transfer mixture to a small bowl.

Heat remaining oil in a wok. Add chicken mixture; stir-fry 6 minutes, or until chicken is opaque. Stir in nut mixture and broccoli. Toss until hot.

Serve with rice.

my son is now getting interested in things NOT justice league. i am very happy he's starting to play with his other toys that were relegated to the garage just because he can't be bothered. my husband told me, while i was away, they've been rummaging the garage, my son opening all garage cabinets looking for all his toy cars. i bet my husband's brainwashing him again, the same way he influenced adam's love for his justice league toys. well, boys will be boys! at least he's into boy's toys.
